Correction ->Sunday Sermon, *August 26*: Islam and Social Action

Throughout August and September, Spirit of Life Unitarian Universalists will be welcoming guest speakers and religious leaders from a diversity of faiths, to give members and guests an opportunity to better understand our religious and spiritual neighbors.   On Sunday, August 19th  August 26th at 11 AM, our guest speaker is Hassan Shibly, from  from the Florida Council on American–Islamic Relations (CAIR), sharing his thoughts on “Islam and Social Action.”     Mr. Shibly will be speaking about CAIR’s mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

Shibly, the son of Syrian immigrants, was raised in Buffalo New York, and currently serves as Executive Director of CAIR in Tampa. He lectures regularly on issues relating to Islam, American Muslims and Civil Rights, and has taught courses on Islamic belief, law, history, spirituality and culture and actively works with various inter-faith and social service organizations to assist those in need and promote cooperation and understanding between diverse faiths and cultures.  He has also appeared in both local and national media outlets including NPR, Voice of America, the New York Times, the Toronto Star and the Buffalo News for his work protecting civil liberties and promoting understanding of the Muslim faith. He runs a successful publishing company and is the founder of the Center for American Muslim Understanding.

Adult Discussion and youth programs begin at 10 am. In our Youth program, children will be talking about “Generosity: Give and Ye Shall Receive,” considering generosity as a central spiritual discipline and religious act.  Registration also opens for our fall Lifespan Religious Education program for youth in K-12.  In Adult Discussion, we’ll talking about 21st century parenting, starting with a look at “Spiderman Dad takes Spiderman Son on Awesome Adventure”.
