Sunday Sermon – September 30th: Separation of Church and State, with Harold Brockus

Throughout the summer, Spirit of Life Unitarian Universalists has welcomed guest speakers and religious leaders from a diversity of faiths, to give members and guests an opportunity to better understand our religious and spiritual neighbors.  This coming Sunday, September 30th, at 11 AM, we’ll be looking at “Separation of Church and State“  with  Harold Brockus, current President on Pinellas Chapter of the Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and a retired Presbyterian Church (USA) and United Church of Christ minister and an organizational consultant. Mr. Brockus will be speaking about religious and political extremism and the importance of keeping the two separate.

Harold Brockus has been a community activist in Pinellas County for over 30 years and has opposed religious and political extremism throughout his life. His causes have included racial and economic justice, farm workers, gay rights, youth services, and peacemaking. He currently serves as President of the Pinellas Chapter of the Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

Adult Discussion and youth programs begin at 10 am. In Adult Discussion, we’ll be looking at “The Nature of Altruism”. An article in the Atlantic recently noted, “A widely-cited landmark study published in Nature in 2007 concluded that infants have the ability to tell good from bad based on observing behaviors. And that they actually prefer good over bad. “ New Zealand researchers recently revisited that test and came to a different conclusion.

All are welcome to join us for services and religious education programs and for coffee and conversation after the service.
