Visiting minister Rev. Bonnie Devlin leads us on a consideration of “Gay Pride and the Welcoming Congregation,” in recognition of Gay Pride Month, when millions of GLBT and allies are marching for their basic civil rights as human beings. The UUA’s Welcoming Congregation program–the first of its kind in any religious denomination–is a monumental undertaking for a congregation, says Rev. Devlin, “and yet the work is never complete, as new horizons of civil liberties and true understanding of Gay Rights emerge daily. Let’s gather to affirm the great success which Spirit of Life UUs have achieved, and reflect on why being a Welcoming Congregation is so vitally important.”
Youth and adult programs begin at 10 am. In our Community Conversations, we’ll be looking at the latest research that says, ” Biology doesn’t run on genes alone.” In a recent article in the journal BioScience, researchers assert that genetic variation alone does not adequately explain the intricate variations in the physiology and behavior of complex organisms, and propose a renewed emphasis on studying individual organisms in the context of specific environments, considering in greater depth the unique environmental exposures and experiences over the course of these organisms’ lives. We’ll consider what this means at scientific and social levels.
