Join us Sunday, January 18th, at 11am to hear Rev. Rus Cooper-Dowda share her sermon, “Accidental Witness: Being in the Birmingham, Alabama school system. ”
“The Birmingham, Alabama school system did not integrate until 1970. I was in 10th grade then,” Rev. Cooper-Dowda recalls. ” It was a terribly confusing time for students as we all got shuffled around less than a week before the new academic year. Every problem was the court’s fault. Segregation went indoors. But students knew we were at the start of something astounding.”
Come hear how kids found their way together in spite of remaining institutional racism.
At 10am, join us in the Kerwin Reading Room adjacent to the kitchen for our weekly Community Conversations adult discussion program. The 3rd Sunday of each month, the discussion group is led by the Keystone Book Club, which takes a light hearted turn this month with, Mermaids in Paradise: A Novel, by Lydia Millet. A Caribbean honeymoon turns into a media circus over a mermaid sighting in this laser-focused satire from Millet (Magnificence, 2012, etc.). “An admirable example of a funny novel with a serious message that works swimmingly.”
In our Youth Lifespan Religious Exploration program, starting after the Story for All Ages, around 11:30am, youth will enjoy some craft time.
